Arizona Bill Actually Affirms Discrimination

I am of the belief that people have the right to feel about homosexuality however they want to, and give whatever reason they want as justification for their views.  I don’t agree with either side trying to make the other side change their minds.

What I DON’T tolerate, or agree with, is overt discrimination and hate.  And what REALLY burns me up, is overt discrimination in the name of Christ.  Enter the state of Arizona.

According to The New York Times:

PHOENIX — The Arizona Legislature passed a measure on Thursday that allows business owners asserting their religious beliefs to refuse service to gays and others, drawing backlash from Democrats who called the proposal “state-sanctioned discrimination” and an embarrassment.

The 33-to-27 vote by the House sent the legislation to Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican.

Governor Brewer does not comment on pending legislation, but she vetoed a similar measure last year. That action, however, came during an unrelated political standoff, and it was not clear whether she would support this plan.

Similar religious protection legislation has been introduced in Ohio, Kansas, Mississippi, Idaho, South Dakota, Tennessee and Oklahoma, but Arizona’s plan is the only one that has passed. The efforts are stalled in Idaho, Ohio and Kansas.

The bill is backed by the Center for Arizona Policy, a social conservative group that opposes abortion and same-sex marriage. It says that the proposal is needed to protect against increasingly activist federal courts and that it clarifies existing state law.

“We see a growing hostility toward religion,” said Josh Kredit, legal counsel for the group.

All but three Republicans in the House backed the bill Thursday evening. The Senate passed the bill a day earlier on a straight party-line vote of 17 to 13.

The legislation also comes as a growing number of conservative states grapple with ways to counter the increasing legality of same-sex marriage.

Arizona’s voters approved a ban on same-sex marriage as a state constitutional amendment in 2008.

During the Senate debate this week, Steve Yarbrough, a Republican, called his proposal a First Amendment issue. Democrats say it is an outright attack on the rights of gays and lesbians.

“You can’t argue the fact that bill will invite discrimination,” said Senator Steve Gallardo, a Democrat.

I am disgusted.  “Religious protection legislation.”  What?  What religion are you “protecting?”  As Christians, we are ordered to love others as He has loved us.  Do you think Christ has “agreed” with everything we have done?  Yet, he still loves us…and UNCONDITIONALLY!  How DARE you refuse service (SERVICE!) to someone because of THEIR choice for THEIR life!

I am currently in the process of applying to a Christian based pregnancy center in order to fulfill internship hours for my counseling degree.  The application is very in-depth and (what I felt at first was) borderline intrusive.  However, the bottom line is that they wanted to know I am a Christian and carry the values as such. Which means, they want to know that I don’t have a problem serving ANYBODY, and that I don’t discriminate against ANY person who walks into that clinic.  That means no matter the race, creed, color, etc.  THAT is what Christianity is about.  Serving, without judging.

You can’t offer help to only those who fit your personal lifestyle liking in the name of Christ.  This bill would be a HUGE mistake and you are extremely naive if you think it wouldn’t lead to discrimination.  I’m interested to know what businesses are included in this bill, and also what other areas of people’s lives are they going to use to refuse service in order to “protect religion.”

Kiev. Venezuela. Pray.

As of right now there is an uprising of violence around the world.  To be honest, I don’t understand the issues (I will get more educated on them though), but from what I see they aren’t being effectively handled.

This is a picture from Kiev (via @MichaelSkolnik):

People LITERALLY on fire.  From what I last heard, a truce had been reached.  The police were heading on the bus to leave the protesters territory, but as they were loading up, the protesters attacked them.  I just read that protesters have captured over 60 police officers.

UPDATED: Just read some info on the situation in Kiev.

Via ABC News:

Three months of largely peaceful protests came to a bloody head this week as thousands of riot police attacked a protest camp in Kiev, Ukraine, resulting in clashes that left at least 26 people dead, including 10 police.

Burning tires and fireworks, lobbed like missiles toward police, lit up the night sky, as stun grenades and reports of gunfire echoed through the city’s medieval streets.

Opposition leader Vitali Klitschko urged more than 15,000 protesters camped out in Independence Square to defy police orders to leave.

Where is Kiev?

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine, a country in Eastern Europe that used to be part of the old Soviet Union but still maintains close political ties with Russia.

What led to the protests initially?

Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych backed out of a trade deal with the European Union in December. This wasn’t just about a trade deal, it was a symbolic decision about the future of the country: Would Ukraine be allied with Europe or with Russia?

That desire to be part of Europe still exists among the protestors, but their struggle has evolved into outrage at the corruption and cronyism that plagues Ukraine’s government.

Yanukovych has at times met protesters with force since December, but clashes escalated this week.

Why didn’t Yanukovych sign the deal with E.U.?

President Yanukovych was under a lot of pressure from Russia, which in the past has cut off gas exports and banned Ukrainian products when Ukraine does things that the Kremlin doesn’t like. That’s a lot of pressure and the Ukrainian economy is already hurting. Russian President Vladimir Putin called Yanukovych, who has been Putin’s ally, to Moscow for marathon meetings just before the EU deal was called off. It’s believed that Putin pressured him into pursuing a deal with Russia instead.

Kiev Looks Like a War Zone

In the end, Yanukovych pledged to join a Russian-led customs union, which also includes Belarus and Kazakhstan. Russia also pledged billions of dollars in emergency loans. The latest $2 billion payment was made on Monday.

Then, seemingly overnight, violence has broken out of Venezuela.

One may wonder why we haven’t heard anything about this.  Well..

I just read that Russia is getting involved with the Kiev situation, not sure what’s happening with Venezuela.

Praying that these conflicts end sooner than later for the sake of lives being lost.

Bye-Bye CNN New Day! HELLOOOO MSNBC Morning Joe!

CNN has continued to upset me.  I came to the conclusion a while ago that I simply just do not like Chris Cuomo, but what else was I going to watch in the mornings?  Felt like I had to tough it out.

Oh.  But this?

Yeah. THIS was the last straw.  I resolved to either just go back to watching music videos on Vh1 Soul or watch random shows on my DVR that I really didn’t have to pay that much attention to.

But then I was like DUH!!! Give MSNBC Morning Joe a try! And I did.  This was the very first thing I saw when I turned it on.

Brian Williams and Lester Holt +  “Rappers Delight” – Sugar Hill Gang (1979) = a very giddy, dancing Tasha.

YEP!  This is how I knew this was meant to be (the conversations on politics/news were pretty good too).

And this…

Yeah. I’m TOTALLY loving this photo.

CONFIRMATION!  So now, I shall watch MSNBC in the mornings!  BYE CNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BYE!

The above video was put together by Jimmy Fallon of “The Tonight Show” last night.  Brilliant!

Just for fun, here are some other videos that have been put together by Jimmy Fallon’s producers.

HA!!! LOVE IT!!!!

Jon Stewart and Jessica Williams discuss Michael Dunn on “The Daily Show”

This is a clip of Jon Stewart and Jessica Williams discussing Michael Dunn on “The Daily Show.” Doesn’t really need any introduction….watch:

“See John, the Stand Your Ground defense is like bleach. It works miracles for whites, but it will ruin your colors.”

I’m Mad.

Two things have me somewhat miffed this morning.

1.  Yeah so he got arrested this morning.  Here’s why according to the Miami Herald.

After allegedly smoking pot all day, drinking beer and popping anti-depressants, bad-boy pop star Justin Bieber went on a wild pre-dawn drag race in South Beach that landed him in jail Thursday morning, police said.

When stopped by police in his Lamborghini, Bieber barraged officers with a string of F-bombs, babbled incoherently, refused to get out of his car and, when he finally stepped out, declined to take his hands out of his pockets, police sources told The Miami Herald.

He was booked at Miami Beach police headquarters on DUI, resisting arrest and drag-racing, a police spokesman said. The musician’s entourage had apparently used their cars to block traffic on Pine Tree Drive at 26th Street, a residential area, at 4:30 a.m., creating a drag strip for the young star, who had been on a party spree in South Florida.

Test showed that Bieber was under the influence of drugs, Miami Beach Police Chief Raymond Martinez told the Miami Herald.

SMH.  I’m not surprised.  But I AM glad he got arrested.  Seriously. He’s been begging for it.  I mean, what is he doing?  Is he trying to build up his street cred or something?  I hope they don’t let him out.  Keep him. Ugh.

UPDATED 10:16am (mugshot)

Um.  Are we sure this is Bieber? Cause… well nevermind.   I won’t go there. He’s smiling, guys.  Like…as if it’s for the paparazzi or a college id card or something.  Also, from what I understand he’s been released. *sigh*

2.  So I was watching CNN’s New Day this morning and one of the stories is that New Yorker’s are mad at Mayor Bill de Blasio. Why?  Well, the affluent part (Upper East Side, Manhattan) didn’t get their snow plowed in a timely manner, while the poorer part (Brooklyn) did.

I’m serious.

And that is so sad.  They were really upset, y’all.  Because their snow didn’t get plowed, but the poor people got clear streets.  I hate it.  I hate everything about it.

Don’t believe me? Read the Daily News story where de Blasio says more could’ve been done to serve the Upper East Side.

WHAT!?  Are you kidding me!? SO WHAT if their snow didn’t get plowed first!? And SO WHAT if Brooklyn did!?!?  This really shows the mentality of some people.  That’s life, bruh.  Sometimes you have to wait to get the snow plowed on your street.

Are you kidding me!? Ugh.
