What do you do when you’re stuck?

Feeling stuck can be frustrating and can apply to many areas of life. Feeling stuck in your relationship(s), careers, etc. Sometimes, it seems as if no matter what you do, you can’t get anywhere.

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received came from my mom. One time I went to her in an emotional and told her, “I don’t know what to do!!!” At this time, this was (of course) dealing with a man/relationship. It seemed as if no matter what I did, things only got worse. The desired outcome seemed to become further and further from my reach. I explained this to her. I had NO idea what to do, especially since the more I *did,* the worse *it* got. What did my mom say?

“Tasha, if you don’t know what to do, do nothing!”

Of course, this shocked me. It didn’t make sense. Cause if I don’t do anything, then how can it get better? I didn’t say anything back. Just sat there and thought about it. And embraced it. I figured what I was doing wasn’t working and I was already at my wits end so, this couldn’t be any worse, huh? So that’s what I did. I did nothing. I let the situation play out. It played out like it was supposed to, while giving me the opportunity to get myself together in the meantime.

Ever since, when I’ve felt stuck, I eventually come back to that piece of advice. Of course, it’s after I have completely exhausted myself mentally and emotionally about whatever may be the situation. The goal is to get to the “do nothing” point before that happens. Still working toward that goal though.

There’s a strange peace in taking the “do nothing” approach. Situations WILL play out exactly how they are supposed to. And to be honest, while you are in the middle of the “do nothing” phase, you are, indeed, doing something. You’re being still. You’re embracing your reality. You’re (hopefully) acknowledging how you’re feeling. You’re calming yourself down. You’re figuring out a way to adjust. You’re praying and meditating. You’re giving yourself a chance to just be, until there’s a CLEAR, productive course of action revealed to you.

There are two approaches one can take to being stuck. I compare it to the (somewhat untrue) approach to quicksand.

You can get worked up and keep moving and flailing about with no clear direction or knowledge of what to do, and sink deeper and further into your “stuckness.”

Or.

You can pause. You can stop moving around, and just *be.* You can let yourself float to the top of said figurative quicksand and then see that there is a clear course of action and get yourself unstuck. You can let go and let things fall into place.

When things aren’t going your way, it may seem counterintuitive to just stop. But honestly, if you’ve done all you can do, what’s the point in frustrating yourself even more, just to find yourself back in the same place?

Sometimes, it’s better to do nothing, loosen your grip, and understand that you can’t control EVERYTHING. You are exactly where you are supposed to be (again, this is assuming that you’ve taken every possible course of action to change your situation). Trust your higher power to work the rest out.

Relax. Be. Then go.
