Stop Trying To “Sell” Jesus

Watch this….

Just in case you didn’t catch that, here are the words to the first verse.

Well I wrote this song for the Christian youth
I wanna teach kids the Christian truth.
If you wanna reach those kids on the street
Then you gotta do a rap, do a hip hop beat.
So heed my sermon, an urban kid
My rhymes are fly, my beats are sick.
My crew is big and it keeps getting bigger.
That’s cause Jesus Christ is my Nigga.

This video was done in an attempt to reach out to the youth ( and get them active in the church.

Honestly, I don’t think this was “intended” to be racist (buuuuuuut….). I believe Pastor Colerick of West Dubuque 2nd Church of Christ (the man rapping according to News One) really wanted to reach out to the youth and tried to relate through a medium he felt the youth would identify with.

There’s nothing wrong with that. This past year my church did “Hip Hop Hope” as the theme for our Vacation Bible School, and it put a “hip hop” spin on it.

The major problem with this “song?” It’s blasphemous!!!!! You don’t, in any way, shape, form, or fashion, call Jesus your “nigga!?!?!?!” I still have a lightweight problem with calling him your “homeboy.” I understand that it’s all a spin on Him being our friend, but He’s also our sovereign savior, and should be respected as such.

So yeah. My opinion? This isn’t okay. When it first came out (the beginning of last year) people (Christians, cause I’m not shocked if not) thought it was hilarious and I simply couldn’t understand. What’s funny about disrespecting Christ? And I have a pretty healthy sense of humor….guess I’m just really cautious when it comes to Christ. Eh.

You don’t have to “sell” Jesus. You don’t have to make him “attractive.” Outreach? Yes. Absolutely. But there’s a fine line that I suggest we all evaluate.

Either the heart is ready to receive Him, or it isn’t. Preach the gospel, *be* the light, and let God handle the rest.
